This plug adapter changes the shape of an appliance's plug so that can plug into a North American NEMA 6-20 straight blade 208/240 volt socket. The receptacle end of the adapter can accept any standard household plug type from any country, except the "Type M" South African SABS1661 (Old British BS-546 "Large") plug. The plug end is a North American NEMA 6-20 plug. The plug is polarized and grounded. Although the NEMA 6-20 socket supports up to 20 amps, the maximum amperage load of this adapter is 15 amps. The NEMA 6-20 socket is not a standard household socket in North America, and is usually not appropriate for foreign visitors bringing personal appliances with them to the United States and Canada.
Compatibility
This travel plug adapter is compatible with the North American NEMA 6-20 straight blade 208/240 volt socket. This type of socket is generally used in industrial environments, and is not a standard household socket. Although the NEMA 6-20 socket supports up to 20 amps, the maximum amperage load of this adapter is 15 amps. Visitors to the United States and Canada who are bringing 220-240 volt appliances with them will usually have little use for this adapter, as 220-240 volt sockets of this type are not typically installed in U.S. and Canadian households/hotels/etc.

The Adapter's "Universal" Socket
The adapter's socket will accept any standard household grounded or non-grounded appliance plug, with one exception: the South African SABS1661 plug (which is actually an old British standard, the 15A "large" version of the BS-546 plug.) Different types of plugs fit into the socket end of the adapter as shown below. Grounded Schuko plugs, whether the "Type F" German style with side grounding clips, or the "Type E" French style, will fit into the socket end of the adapter, but
the grounding connection will not be made.
